What comes to your mind when you think of a software program? Do you think of Microsoft Solitaire? Do you think of a room full of teletype terminals with green screens and large refrigerator size cabinets over a white tile floor? Do you think of an accounting program? Do you try your best not to think of anything?

A software product is purchased by more than one person or organization. All of the above programs are software products. In contrast, a software project is a software program developed for one organization, usually to do something only that organization needs to do. Generally, only large companies tend to pay for software development projects.

Maplewood Software is a company full of software developers. We occasionally build software that will only be used by one organization. But our main focus is to build and customize software that will be sold to many different organizations and people.

Web Browser
When our customers see our software, they are using a browser on their desktop or laptop to do so. Just like looking up the latest news or using google to search for information, the browser brings up our application. There is no installation process or CD to keep on the shelf. There is no need to hire a computer professional to get our products to work for you.

SQL Server Database
We keep your information safe using a Microsoft SQL Server database or a Sybase database. These database tools are expensive, mature, and proven technologies. That is why we use them. We are experts in Transact SQL programming and our products benefit from the years of programming experience we have.

JavaScript
Javascript is a programming language created by Netscape to manipulate web pages in a browser. Other browser vendors, like Microsoft, followed Netscape’s lead and put Javascript in their browsers too. Since we run our programs in your browser, we write a lot of Javascript. Several years ago, the term AJAX was invented to describe the combination of technologies that make this work well. AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript And XML. We were using these technologies long before that term was invented.

Java
Java is a programming language created by Sun Microsystems. Java is very different from Javascript despite the similarity of the name. Javascript was actually named after Java. Java is distinguished by its ability to run on many different operating systems. It is the most popular programming language in the world. Maplewood Software uses Java to collect data from the database and prepare that information to be displayed in a web-browser.
